I am thinking about putting a 272 in my 37 Chevy p/u and would like to retain the S10 T-5 if possible so would I need the 3 or 4 speed truck bellhousing.

The bell housing for the 4 speed HD tranny bolts are about 8 1/2" between. The top bolts for the three speed tranny are 5 1/4" center to center. My guess is you need the T-5. Somewhere I read an article on how to mod the bell housing but where.

Using a Mustang T-5 behind the Y-blocks is a fairly common mod for the trucks. The 3 speed bell housing can be modified to fit the
T-5. Check out John Mummerts site for more info. Don't think the S-10 T-5 are a good fit, but many use the S-10 T-5 tail housing to move the shiftier forward enough to clear the seat.

This site has a step x step pictorial on fitting a S10-T5 behind a Y-block http://www.badgerlandf100s.com/ Go to lefthand menu "tech corner" then T5 install.

When I get back from Florida I will measure the T-5,years ago I ran into someone who bolted a ford 4 speed with granny trans to a 235 so I think a GM T-5 should bolt to the truck Y block bellhousing if what I was told was the truth.

The Chevy pattern looks similar but is different. It will not bolt directly to the bellhousing. You will need to adapt or modify the bellhousing or transmission.

I will most likely use the mustang trans with the S10 tail shaft.

If you use the mustang T-5 then you need the bell housing from a 3spd truck (y-block). If you decide to use an S-10 T-5 then you need the bell housing from a 3 spd car (1950's) Y-block.
