I am putting a 1956 well built 292 into my 54 Merc 2 door wagon with T85 overdrive trans.  The engine has a steel bushing in the crank, Should I change it to a bearing ?

Also is there a big difference in the 9 1/2 clutch over the 10 inch clutch.  I can get a really good deal on the 9 1/2 inch clutch or will I need the 10 inch?

I would suggest a bearing instead of bushing, and theres 1/2" difference between the clutchs, ha, ha! go 10 " at least.Smile

FWIW, I have used bronze pilot bushings for years and never had a problem.  If you need convincing re. the clutch disc, calculate the area of the friction material 9 1/2" versus 10".  Which will have more holding capacity?

Personaly prefer the 11" clutch. This is a case where bigger is better. Would go with the 10" mimimum.

The 9.5" were only used on 6cylinder passenger cars.

The flywheel off the Merc engine will take a Borg and Beck pressure plate not a Long.

A 10" is okay with a good pressure plate.
