Got a line on a 60 edsel at a pullapart,going to try to get there in the next couple of days. I'm guessing it'll be a 292 with an auto. I don't need anymore core motors,but I am planning on eventually going with an AOD for my project.

So the question is with the different ways to adapt an AOD,what are the pros and cons of each? Should I try to grab that 292/auto to get the auto bellhousing,etc? All my cores are straight shift trans.

So which AOD adaptor is best/easiest? Thanks,Bill

This is the only AOD to Y-Block adapter that I'm aware of:

Pretty pricey - Adapter Only @ $850.



Upon further review, it seems that Gearstar also has an adapter, but I couldn't find anything about pricing on their site, just an article on an install. http://www.gearstar.net/articles/details.php?unid=16

I installed an AOD in bird with a bendtsens. You can read about the pros and cons here http://birddropnz.blogspot.com/2009/01/figuring-out-how-to-install-aod.html



Gary Crone (I think) will modify AOD's to work, check with Mummert for info. (Bristol services)



And another adapter I haven't tried is made by Wilcap. http://www.wilcap.com/ford.html#312350]Wilcap.

Uses a Scrub 4sp auto. I wanted FORD in a FORD. In retrospect if I had the options with time and money (who has that!) I would have liked to have seen how this one worked to compare.



Best way to figure all this out is to mock up an empty block and trans shell. Fitment to tunnel and crossmember cleaence are the issues. That and you may as well get ready to buy a Lokar throttle cable and pedal as well. Factory linkage was just to archaic in combo with the Lokar AOD cable.



Just keep in mind this is a custom install, not a bolt in.

Thanks everybody for the info. Really appreciate it. Went to the junkyard to check out the 60 Edsel today. It's got what remains of a MEL motor,and a shift quadrant that has L, D1, and D2. Would that make this a FMX trans?

Also looked at a sad 62 Galaxie 2 door,with a Y block and auto. May go back and get this one if it's still there next time I get a day off. Still not sure which way to go on an adaptor for the AOD,but maybe I should grab that core cause it is an automatic.

Any more ideas? Anybody else use the Bristol adaptor,or the Wilcap? Want to keep it all Ford,so the Wilcap looks like my last choice.

willie: That trans u described is likely a Dual Range Cruiseomatic. If I understand it, it's similar to a later C-4 transmission. May be corrected on that point. While I'm here, there was an excellent tech article on C-4s in a Mustang & Fords magazine back in May 2006.

For what it worth I did a lot of research and this is what I am doing( not done yet) I bought a late model (91) AOD trans and had Silverfox Trans adapt the internals of a stock  4R70W into it.rated at 400 hp  That will give you lower gears in 1 2 &3rd ( lots of tourque and power) and maintain higher  overdrive gearing (better cruising, highway miliage) This is behind a mildly built 312 Y I have about $800.00 invested in the trans. I went with the Bob Berndstiens adapter package. (Transmission adapters)900.00 with shipping. According to the website, Wilcap doesnt bolt to the AOD. Gary Croan(Bristol Services) does't make an adapter, he machines the AOD Case to fit the Y Block therefor additional cost in labor and shipping etc. You have to send him an empty case to machine. It was going to run me over $1000.00 more than Bob's but it will look more orginal and may be a little stronger.  I had already rebuilt mine and didn'ty want to tear it down again. There are a couple other companys that sell the Y Block to AOD adapter but I am pretty sure they are  Bobs for about  the same money. You will still have to get cabels and do some fab work. As far as picking up the bell housing's  Gary advertises in the Y-Block magazine, he will buy all of them you can get. You will have to contact him to see what he's willing to pay.(949-722-1122) Besides this site you may want to visit the guys over at the HAMB (52 to56 social club)there is a lot of informatin on swaping to the AOD.Hope this helps.

I also went with bendetsens for the adapter, many on here may think it heresy but I had a free th350 offered to me and it would adapt to the 700r4 if I wanted the 4 speed. I would have liked to get a c4 and keep it all ford, but you can't argue with free. The th350 was set up to eliminate the kick down and tv cable so it made install a breeze. Only issue was the shims for the starter, but that sorted itself out really quickly. I built so e struts for the rear engine mounts and it works pretty well. Sent an e mail to. On during install he was helpful and pretty quick to respond.

I too am using the same adapter with my 292 + E4OD.



It is NOT CHEEP but it is well made and everything fits nicely.
