I have an 57' 312 y-block I have changed the oil. The dip stick shows I have to much oil by about two quarts? And have only put 5 quarts of 10w-40 in. Could the dip stick be worn out, or have gas got into my oil?

I doubt the dipstick is worn out. Couple questions: Gas in your crankcase is a serious thing--do you have reasons to suspect there's gas in your oil? Was the vehicle on level ground when you drained it? Did you replace your oil filter? Depending on type, that holds a significant amount of oil. Are you sure that you're over by 2 quarts?

I had the car up on jack stands to do the oil change. I did replace to oil filter. Could be over by a quart, I know its over the full line about an inch. I hear that y-blocks hold 6 quarts of oil with a filter changed. When I have drained the old oil there was not much viscosity seemed like there was gas in the oil. should I drain a quart of oil out?

If there is gas in your oil you would be able to smell it on the dipstick or through the oil fill tube. Have you changed anything in the system? Is the dipstick the correct one for your engine? Also did you start the engine after the oil change to circulate the oil? And lastly, did you pre-fill the oil filter when you put it on? Chuck

Assuming that you don't have gas in your oil have you run the engine after the oil change so as to fill the oil filter? Jeff

I did run the engine, after the oil changed. When changing the oil filter i did not fill up before putting on does that make a difference? Dipstick looks to be an original y-block dip stick. Check dipstick before start-up, and after running for a period of time still says it full.

32,'312, what makes you think that you have gas in the oil? I can't imagine that if you changed the oil then drove the car a bit that you could get an inch of gas in the oil pan. On my particular motor the little cup portion on the top of the dip stick that limits the amount the dip stick can be pushed into the tube is loose. I can push this cup all the way up to where the dipstick handle is curved. (I will calibrate the dip stick and repair this before I finish rebuilding the motor). If this cup is an inch to far up then you could push the dipstick too far into the oil pan. Good luck.

32'/312 (4/8/2013) I did run the engine, after the oil changed. When changing the oil filter i did not fill up before putting on does that make a difference? Well, it can affect the reading the dipstick gives until you run the engine a few moments, because the filter cartridge displaces a certain amount of oil. So it's possible to be "over" by what appears to be about a quart, and then that overage will diminish as the oil is circulated into the cartridge... But since you report you've run the engine for awhile now....I don't mean to be impertinent, but is it possible that you miscounted by one?

A lot of folks recommend at least partially filling the oil filter before you put it on. Reduces the chance of a no oil situation on startup. If you changed oil and filter and have added 6 quarts after running until the oil pressure comes up it should read at the full mark on the stick. Assuming you aren't smelling gas on the stick that only leaves the dipstick to be the culprit. Chuck
