The engine and trans are out of my 57 Bird.   I think I have read where the trans can be modified to start in low and upshift to 2nd and high when the shifter is in the drive spot, making it always use all three speeds and operate like a newer transmission.   Can these modifications be done?   The trans will be rebuilt by a local shop, but I would like to know if this can be done before taking it in.   If this has been posted before please redirect me.   Thanks in advance.   J

Joe:

Yes, it can be done.  It takes a valve body and detent from an FMX or "dual range" Cruiso, the one with two Dr positions on the shifter.  Also, the case has to be drilled and tapped for the vacuum modulator.  Other options are using a complete FMX with the FOM front pump and input shaft and reworking the rear mount and driveshaft.  Or the FOM tail shaft and housing can be used and the mount and driveshaft stay the same.  If this last option is used, be careful of the extension housing gasket.  Make sure it seals the lower corner of the housing.

This has been discussed on old forums, but I think I heard Ted say the old ones are no longer available.

Thanks for all the info.   I will print and show it to the rebuilder.   He said they used to rebuild a lot of them 30 years ago, but hasn't had one in the shop for a couple of years - thought it would be interesting to do something different for a change.   J
