          You can find brushes, bearings and and starter drives at Dennis Carpenter, Mac's, or Concours. Also check your local NAPA dealer, I'd bet they have 90% of the same parts for less money. Once you try the gear drive you'll never go back though.

If you get a high torque starte you will give up the great sound of the Flathead and Y block starter get an exchange that is the best.

I got a high torque mini starter - its great. Wouldn't fool around with a stock starter anymore.

Rebuild kits are available for this type of starter. If you have a NAPA store nearby, I'd check with them. You'll want to do a little reading about how to do it because you'll want to clean and perhaps undercut the commutator. Pay attention to the area where the brushes are installed. There is usually a small hole where you put in a paper clip or some similar stiff bit like a toothpick to hold the brushes back against their springs while you assemble the part, then you pull the paper clip out and the brushes spring out onto the commutator. You can use emery cloth to polish the commutator.

how many of you guys have  rebuilt your starters by yourself????? The one on my 292 is starting to grind reall bad and i am thinking about tryn my hand a second time at rebuilding a starter. i did the one on  my green 64 ford f100 with a 223 but the backing plate was shot and didnt know you could get a new one so i bought a rebuilt for like  60 bucks, but wanna give rebuilding a starter  another try.  any recomendations as to parts you all have come across.  Like i stated before. the one on my 292 is grinding and i wanna give rebuilding a starter another go, so any helpful hints would be greatly appreciated. thinking about just getting a rebuild kit and a new backing plate. anything else i should replace????
