Just a short introduction to myself as I'm a knew old kid on this block. 62 years young and a car addict most of my life but have just now gotten into Fords in my later years. In the process of restoring a 57 Tbird that I found in an old garage where it had sat for at least thirty Michigan years. Right now the frame is painted, body on the rotissorie, the block and heads are back and going togeather. I do this myself evenings and Sundays so progress is steady by jerks at best. Anyway, enough about that.

Kinda feel like a dipstick askin this but, I'm in the middle of putting my 312 back togeather after being apart for a few months. As forgetfull as I am anymore I thought I was pretty smart baggin and labeling the bolts but now that it's going togeather I realize there is two holes in the block to press the dipstick in, one in the back middle and one in the front. I know that the dipstick goes in the back one in my application but for the life of me I can't remember what was taken out of the front one. Any help out there.

The hole is plugged with what is essentially a small freeze plug. That is,it's a small plug if the T-Bird is the same as a truck, and I'm sure it is.

PWH 42 is correct. The front hole is for the sedans dipstick. A parts store should have the plug.

Thanks, makes sense and kinda explains why I don't remember what I took out of it. The machine shop mutsa punched it out when they cleaned the block. Glad to know it wasn't just a senior moment, they seem to be getting a lot closer togeather than they used to. If I'm  not mistaken I also need a small plug for one of the water jacket holes in the head also is that correct?

Uncle,

That is correct, check your gasket kit, might be one for the head in there. If not, NAPA here we come.

any chance anyone would happen to know the size of the plug for the head, or a NAPA number. Of the three places I'v been two of them give me the wrong size and one just looked at me like I was workin on something from outer space.

Uncleaud:

The head plug is 59/64.  NAPA number 219-3077.  The dipstick hole plug is .540.  Same as in the ends of the rocker arm shaft.  NAPA 219-2098.
