I recently acquired a 57 F100Paid way too much for it but that was another one of them ebay burn deals. anyhow, it is supposed to be a farm find and totally stock, never tampered with and appears to be so but the distributor is 55-56 style and it has a 3 bolt carb instead of the 4. Was this combination carried over to 57 on trucks, later than on cars??? The heads appear to be ECZ-? I cannot make out the last number because the casting is upside down and backwards. The block is a dearborn casting but those letters are backwards also and the intake has a number that does not look familiar to me, I think it has a w in it but my mind could be going, I just wanted to get it loaded and get home so I will get more info when I can. Has anybody ever came across blocks or heads with the numbers cast upside down and backwards???

Billy: The only ones I've seen with the numbers/letters backwards were the ones I looked at with a mirror. The distributor and carb were not carried into '57, unless possibly Canadian trucks did. My guess is that someone has installed a '55-'56 engine in the truck's past. John

Thats what I was afraid of but it honestly does not look like it has ever been tampered with. The numbers do appear to upside down and backwards compared to all the other blocks I have here. I will go over today and get definate info.

The trucks carried over the 3 bolt carb. I have a friend with a 57 and his had the early style dizzy I believe as well. 1958 is when they switched over to 4 bolt carbs. Most of the 57 trucks that I've seen have G heads. I just purchased a 1957 f-600 and I believe I felt a "g" on the heads. Hope this helps. If there is any paint left of the motor it should be yellow if original.

Mr4speed: Thanks for setting me straight on '57 trucks. I assumed they followed the cars' production changes. There's that word "assume" that catches me every time. John

John, I didn't mean to come off sounding like I know it all, I guess I should say that from all my sightings and looking for real correct trucks, thats what I've seen.

I picked up a 57 272 out of a pick up and it had the G heads. I think ?? that all 57's had G heads, cars and trucks.

I browsed through other sites with 57 trucks for sale and those also had the 3 bolt carb and early dizzy so it must have been caried over on trucks. The head numbers are definately upside down and reading backwards compared to the heads I have in front of me. It has the high ratio rockers. Now the question is, if 55-56 272 with the 1.78 valves and low ratio rockers was rated at 160-182hp, then how come the 57 with G heads 1.92 valves and high ratio rockers is only rated at only 145hp??? the intake is an ECW9424-A of coarse I did not write these numbers down so I am only going by memory which may not be so good. would it be the intake that is hampering the HP.

Y block Billy (2/4/2008) Now the question is, if 55-56 272 with the 1.78 valves and low ratio rockers was rated at 160-182hp, then how come the 57 with G heads 1.92 valves and high ratio rockers is only rated at only 145hp??? the intake is an ECW9424-A of coarse I did not write these numbers down so I am only going by memory which may not be so good. would it be the intake that is hampering the HP.Potentially a lower compression ratio with the G heads or the engine could have just been rated at a lower rpm. Just a guess as I don’t have any truck documentation to compare year by year. Doubt seriously that it's related to the intake though.

The cam would be a major difference between the car and truck, with the truck one producing less HP with a broader torque range at lower revs, A cam change, especially an aftermarket spec, will liven it up.
