I recently purchased a 312 Y block disassembled in 1967 to overhaul and not assembled including new parts to assemble The intake and carb are still together ..ECZ-B intake and an AFB 4 barrel with all the connections ..heat tube and spacer/..looks stock..carb has a large aluminum vac chamber connected to choke..the part number on carb is 2441 I looked up in hemmings parts locater and it says original on a 1957 Ford..312....it also shows AFBs on some 58 59 & 60 Fords [other # though].. What vehicle would this have been in??? ive not seen AFBs on Fords..THANKS

1957 was an interesting year for FoMoCo regarding carburetion.


In place of the Holley 4000 ‘teapot’ used in ’56 on 292s and 312s, for single quad application 1957 Ford passenger cars (312 engine only), Ford used the new end bowl Holley 4150 carburetor OR the new end bowl Ford (Autolite) 4100 OR the new Carter AFB. Single quad ’57 312 ‘Birds used only the Holley 4150 carburetor.


In place of the Holley 4000 ‘teapot’ or Carter WCFB (used on 2 [?] models in ’56), for single quad applications 312 y-blocks, ’57 Mercs used the new Holley 4150s or the new Carter AFB, in my junkyard experience.


Many Carter AFBs used on ’57 Fords and Mercs have the part number ECZ 9510-AA on the front edge of the aluminum base casting above the idle adjusting screws.


The vacuum chamber you mentioned adjacent to the choke housing controls the opening of the secondary throttle plates.

The one I put on my '58 Ford 292 back in 1963 or 64 came off of a '57 Merc. Worked great on my stock engine. Had to trim a little off the spring in the vacuum diaphragm that operates the secondary's to get them to start opening about the time the tires stopped spinning when launching it from a dead stop.
