Do I need sealant on a timing chain gasket and front of oil pan. It's kind of tough to put on when the engine is in the car. any suggestions on how to do this would be helpful. I will put sealant on the water pump gasket but I was wondering about the timing cover gasket. Thanks.

Bobby O; The timing chain gets quite a bit of oil from the rocker shaft tube and then is splashed all over by the oil slinger. It would be a good idea in my opinion to use sealant on the timing cover gasket. I like Aviation Permatex in the little bottle with a brush applicator. Make sure you get all the old gasket material off before applying the new one. Good Luck! Rono

A little sealant never hurts. Just don't gob it on there. The thinnest coat will do the trick. Have you ever seen a big bead of sealant squished out around a gasket? Well, that also squishes out on the inside and is absolutely not nesessary.

I use the copper RTV, both sides of of the gasket. It comes off easy with this stuff.

I use the Copper Coat stuff in the spray can. I use hi temp silicone RTV on the water pump ports. Never had a problem. A little goes a long way here.
