Is there an easy way to remove the adapter from the rear of the head, so it can be used in another head?

I have a slide hammer with a NPT threaded end that screws into the adapter on the head. The slide part of this affair probably weighs on the order of 3 lbs which applies quite a bit of kinetic energy to assist in removing the adapters. While cumbersome, it does work for this purpose.

These "adapters" are available after market. Two sizes that I know of, one for early (54-55) and late (56 and later?)

Special tools are available to remove them, I got mine from a TBird parts supplier

I made a slide hammer from pipe, a cap, and a steel disk to slide. I heated head around the insert a bit then it popped right out. I installed the new one with another piece of pipe, some sealant, and a mallet.

I made some this past spring. I welded 1/2" theaded rod to a 3/8" iron pipe nipple and one to a 1/4" iron pipe nipple. The 1/4" one started to break at the last 2 threads so I bought a metric bolt and cut the head off. I threaded the end for 1/4" iron pipe. A coupling big enough to clear the bushing in the head and some washers and turn the nut down and pull the bushing out. I can't find the 3/8" one right now, here's a picture of the 1/4" one.
