How important is it that the crossover pipe is able to move at the slip join?
Reason I ask is mine has been welded up and I have a cracked manifold and was wondering if that would be the cause or at least contribute to it.
I have another manifold to replace it and was thinking I would run a grinder/hacksaw around the crossover pie to "unweld" it

The slip joint is to allow for expansion and contraction during heat cycles. I would keep it as intended, unwelded. Chuck

Chuck is correct, it's supposed to be a slip joint. However, rather than repairing that setup, you might want to consider obtaining another exhaust manifold & converting to dual exhaust. That crossover setup has been Dyno tested & proved very inefficient...

Being a R/H/D vehicle, and a column shift manual, there is very little room on the drivers side for a cast manifold that exits to the rear. I am sticking with original for the time being. Maybe extractors once the engine gets rebuilt.
I will grind the weld off the crossover pipe and replace the manifold on my next lot of days off. Sand blast the manifilds and some cast iron gray high heat paint will keep it looking nice.

i never saw one that moved.allwere welded or rusted solid.doesnt hurt a thing.

Yeah, as above.
Just leave it as it is.
I have never seen one on an engine that you could move.
I agree with your decision regarding retaining the cross-over pipe.
With the selector lever, transmission dipstick and steering shaft all being on the right hand side, there is buggar all room for getting anything short of a custom made pipe down there.
Aussie Bill's extractors would obviously have fitted but he stopped making these years ago.
