What happened to the site now.  All of a sudden I have to login everytime I want to read the posts, and I still can't get the system to remember me.  What have I done wrong.  With a long email address and a long password, I am sometimes tempted to just skip it.

John, All that I can say is that it must be something on your end.  The code for the forum was indeed changed a few days ago so that it does remember you.  When you login, did you check the button that says "remember me"?  Ted and I have been testing this week and neither of us has ever had to re-log in since the code was changed.  It remembers us each time.

Let me know if you have that box checked.

Hi Jim-- after reading the post today, I logged in and made sure the remember me was clicked.  Ist time that I havn't had to always log in. Have usually checked the post everyday, but did not log in.   Many thanks for getting the site fixed.  Thank you everyone for all the info.  God Bless   Eddie

Hey Jim

Whatever you did to the site a few days ago fixed it ? I had to login ever time I visited the site .Now it remembers me ( how could it forget me ??? ) . Don't change a thing .Maybe you should consider making it harder for those north of the border to Login ??? Just a thought .

Jim:

I have clicked the remember me box EVERY time I have logged in.  Also, why does it put my signature twice every time I post?  I only type it in once.

I tried the "remember me" last night and it worked for at least one return try over the evening. But.....this morning I had to log in all over again. The way it is set up it must roll over on the new day?

Logging in again isn't such a big deal to me - the place where I work has everyday security logs.

John,  Try deleting all the old cookies and see if this helps as far as remembering your login.  You could possibly have some old cookies confusing the new code.  Sounds like you inherited the problem that most of the forum members including myself had as far as the site not remembering your login.    I did find the problem with the double signature and corrected that.

Jim,

The log in is working for me. Now can you fix the part where if you change the font or the color in the message, the program does not recognize that you've typed anything. As long as part of the message uses the base font you're good.

Hoosier Hurricane,

Don't type your name in after a post, it is already there with your little picture.

PS I left a PM for you, check your mailbox on this site.  I won't sign my name and it will be there automatically.

Remember, I'm a mechanic, not a computer whiz.  What are cookies?  The girl scouts sell them around here, but what do they have to do with the site?  Where do I find them to delete them?

Paul, the only PM I find from you was the one of Oct 21, which I answered a few days ago.  Have you sent one since then?

Whatever was done it didn't work for me.  I logged in last night, clicked on the remember me, and had log in again tonight.  Trying again tonight.

John F.

I don't find any PM's in my in box.  Maybe I don't know where to look.  In the upper RH corner of my screen I see 0/1 Messages, none received and one sent.  As far as the cookies go, make mine raisin oatmeal.

Well that is a first for me I came back to the site and didn't have to log in. Never had that pleasure before. Thanks for the fix. Gerry

John, Here's the official definition of the cookie in question: A small text file of information that certain Web sites attach to a user's hard drive while the user is browsing the Web site. A Cookie can contain information such as user ID, user preferences, archive shopping cart information, etc.

Cookies should be deleted or cleaned up on a regular basis if for no other reason than to keep the computer running more smoothly and freeing up hard drive space.  I'm going to go through what I would consider to be the easiest method and may also work on your computer depending upon the the operation system version you're using.

Click on the 'start' at the lower left of your screen.

Click on 'My computer'.

Click on 'Change a setting'.

Double click on on 'Internet Options'.

At this point you should get a pop-up window that's labeled 'Internet Properties'.  In the middle will be section labeled 'Temporary Internet Files'.  Just click on the 'Delete Cookies' button and that will take care of those cookies.  Just keep in mind that any sites where you use a username and password that's remembered will require you to re-enter those upon getting back into those sites as they use the cookies you're deleting to remember your password.  Like this site, look for the 'remember me' spot to select so you only have to do it once.

While you're in the 'Temporary Internet Files' section, I also recommend pushing the 'Delete Files' button.  These are the temporary files that are saved each time you visit different websites and these files definitely pile up and bog the computer down if they are not deleted on a regular basis.  Deleting these files will be invisible to anything you normally do on the computer.  If you don't have the computer set up to delete these automatically, you can very easily have tens of thousands of these files if they've never been deleted.  If this is the case, you'll see a very noticable increase in computer speed when they are deleted.

At this point just hit okay and close out the 'Control Panel'.

If this method doesn't work, I got a way that will take you through your C drive and do it manually.  Just let me know.

John, that was too good about cookies being from Girl Scouts! I gotta remember that!

Also, it is possible that you may not have cookies enabled. Just send me airfare and I'll come up and get you all fixed up Smile

Seriously, latch on to some computer geek and get him to take a look at the settings in your web browser program. I use Mozilla Firefox, but most folks use Microsoft Internet Explorer. The fact that the cookies function is working for most really makes me think that it is just a simple setting in your browser that is not saving them. I have been really busy this weekend and had not logged in since I left work on Friday and it remembers me fine. Also, knowing that the developer spent 20 hours rewriting the program in the area where it determines how long the cookies are good for (no, they don't get stale), I have every confidence that the problem has actually been corrected. Once you get your browser straightened out you will once again be 'ol 'smilin John!

Guys:

Thanks for all the suggestions.  I like Jim's latest suggestion especially.  My "geek" will be here for Thanksgiving, I'll have him help me eat all the cookies and defrag and empty the trashcan and maybe he knows something else that need to be done.

Paul, if your PM was about the Menards thing, well, that type of thing is not something I'm in to.  Thanks for your heads up on it.  We do have a local Menards.
