I want to put a t5 transmission behind my 292 in my 1960 f100, would a 1994 ford t5 out of a mustang be a good one to use, I can pick one up for about 300 bucks with everything but bellhousing, if I go with this tranny will it mate up to my bellhousing, I have a t98 4speed currently

A '94 T5 is not the best choice because it has a longer input shaft.
No T5 mates up with any factory Y Block bellhousing.  There is nothing "off the shelf" that will allow it to mount to your 4 speed bellhousing.  The way to do it with a truck is to modify the bellhousing so that the transmission mounts directly to it.  A 3 speed bellhousing is usually used for that.

ive rebuilt the 292 and wanted a good tranny to go behind it, ive also got a 3speed that came factory in the truck, I can use it if its a good choice, I haven't had the truck on the road yet so I im not sure if it would work good with the 292

If the 3 speed is a Borg Warner T-85 it's more tranny than a 292 will ever need; bolt it in and drive it like you stole it.

The stock 3 speeds moved those trucks around just fine.  From that perspective, it is a good choice.

What are your plans for the truck?  Will the 3 speed suit those plans or will something more sporty and modern, like a T5 and overdrive work better for you?

As Charlie asks, what's the use for the truck. T-5's have some major advantages, like 5 speeds and a synchro first gear. As much as I like a T-85 O/D, the combination of traffic and hills meant that for every second shift to 2nd gear, I was going to get to double clutch down the 1st.

My roadster has a TKO 5 speed, on a truck bell, modified by J Mummert.

Look carefully at the T-5. There are many variations, and some won't handle the torque of a Y. Others have an imput shaft issue. If you can't find that here, run a search over at the HAMB.

thanks guy,im not sure what the 3speed is, its still under the truck, but I will check it, im just building the truck for something to ride to cruise night and around town every once in a while, just a nice street rod

If that is your proposed use the 3 speed will work fine.Especially since you already own itSmile
