Is My Visible Crack a Problem For You?

Just got the scoop on my 292 castings after being cleaned and magged. Posted G heads are great, crank is great, one bearing cap is toast (photos - 2 cracks), and there's a small crack on my block just below the rear main seal (photos). Also looks like this area was treated with a JB Weld type goo at one time. Should I use this block, and if so, how best to treat my crack at the rear main seal groove? The rest of the block is good and is .040 at this time. What would you do if this was your baby? I outlined the cracks in red below.

I think the block would hold a rear main seal without any problem. I would however, look very closely at the bolt holes in the block were that cap was. It appears to be #2 which is the common place for a block to crack. The crack is usually on the passenger side.
You will need to find a main cap that closely matches the cracked one and have the block line honed.

Thanks for your thoughts John. I'll ask my machinist to take a close look at the area you mentioned. He thought the little crack at the seal groove would hold as well.
Might see you at the shootout in May. And I'll be in touch about a mild performance kit and other goodies.

the main cap in the picture looks like a bearing spun at some point,so a used cap and line bore on all the mains is a must. i agree the small crack at seal aria should be ok, probley ther from new. good luck on your build
