Tim, some time ago you mentioned that your's is a working truck. Here's some pictures of mine working.
One is the Ephrata fair parade, I pull a church float. The others are once a year or so I pull the camper with it.Usually when we go to a car show.
It's not entirely used for drag racing

Very Nice! I think the trailer is a little too new for the truck, you should have a "Shasta" or some other "Ham Can" trailer. I was chatting with Jim Culver the other night and told him that when I can make it to Columbus I want to drive the '58 with the Alaskan out, what a trip that would be in late Aug. with no A/C. My wife Kathy says she likes the color of your truck, it matches her Herald.

Tim , I get a lot of comments on the color, I like it too.
We had a '73 Shasta before this one. I thought it was perfect for us, but mom got the itch for a new camper and you got to take care of mom. That was the camper we had when I built the garage. The new one stuck out of the door an inch and a half, and I have to let the air out of the tires to 15 psi so I can get under the header. Look again at the picture how tall it is compared to the door.
You need a fresh air vent in front of the windshield like the 53-56 has. At speed it feels pretty good.

I don't know anything about posting pictures, but I have a working truck that several of you guys have seen. It is a '53 F350 with a lengthened frame, a 324 cubic inch Y, 4 speed granny gear trans, inline R11 overdrive. I use it to haul my race car in the summer, and in the fall I put a hopper bed on it and haul soybeans to market. I ususally gross over 13,000 pounds when hauling beans, and the engine doesn't even breathe hard. I guess you can call it a working truck.

Hi Dennis Tim and John Here is a pic of Frank Roelke's Y block '64 Rollback hauling freight! the picture is a bit old and the Truck isn't quite so handsome but Frank still uses it for his rapair shop business Olde Towne Motors in Sykesville Md. if not every day than at least once or twice a week. This truck has been raced at the shootout several times.
Revised 2/9/09 to show my truck taking ice storm damaged tree limbs here in Louisville to the mulch center the second of several loads.

we have another working truck in the family, it's a 1960 F-600 that my uncle Frank bought "New" in late '59. He used it to haul oranges to the packing house in the days when you carried them in "Lugs" not the big field bins that they use today. It still runs like a champ but is mainly used to haul the crawler tractor up to the hill for work and once in a while a parade also.
here is a video, I think some of you have seen before. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oM84Rp0OflI&feature=channel_page

Tim, I watched the video. I should have your gearing for parade driving. Not so good for racing though.

pintoplumber (2/6/2009) Tim, I watched the video. I should have your gearing for parade driving. Not so good for racing though.I once used it to tow the JCs Santa float in our Christmas parade, put it in low range 1st gear and with the hand throttle on the dash about 2000 rpm was a good walking pace. No need to do anything but stear.

Here is a work truck for you
1962 Ford C600
Grandpa bought it new in 62, has a 292 with a 4spd. Is still in the family.
This is my first post here, but couldn't resist posting the big truck.

Thanks, Charlie, for posting the picture. With the trailer in the background, it looks like the truck is a tri-axle. Hmmmmm. That's the tail end of my Bird visible behind the car.

And a bicycle holding up the center of the very very long drive shaft? Chuck in NH

The tri-axle illusion is a part of the reason I took that picture. I wish I had noticed the positioning of the trash can. I would have made it look like it was all being balanced on it. The other part of the reason is that it is just cool! Old race car being carried by an older truck.

John, what color is your 57 Bird? It appears to be similar to mine. Mine is 74 Lincoln Mark Dark Moondust Firemist metallic. Thank you, Charlie - Central Fl.

Charlie: It's Thunderbird Bronze, the original color for it. It has the supercharged engine, I have raced it in pure stock drag races. It was at Columbus in Charlie's pic because I loaned it to Gordon Payne to race in the Y shootout.

I just drove this home yesterday after buying it off craiglist, In Muskogee, OK. It was about 50 miles home with no, I repeat NO brakes, I took the back roads-some of old route 66. Quite an adventure, did I mention it didn't have brakes.
I was hoping it had a y in it, but when I called she said she didn't know anything about cars and nether did her husband.
The girl I bought it from said that her grandfather and his brother bought it new, together, because that's the only way they could afford to buy it.
I kind of like the old straight six.
The body is pretty straight and without rust, except for one small hole in the drivers floor, which is why I went ahead and bought it. It has an old backyard paint job, over what appers to be a decent original academy blue. I ran about 50-55mph most of the way home.
I need to get get it's brakes repaired so it can start earning it's keep around here fast.

Hi Al Be careful driving loads of gravel or firewood down hill! Seriously, I converted my truck to power disc brakes with a kit that I had seen in the Mid Fifties catalog but bought direct from the manufacturer in CA. Fairly reasonable and went on pretty well as those things go.

Not a bad looking truck, and don't sell the six short, they are pretty good engines. Do you know if it is a 223 or a 262?
|
By PF Arcand - 16 Years Ago

Tim: In a 1/2 ton, would it not be a 223 cu.inch? Yes, another Ford engine that hasn't got the credit it deserves. Also, there are a few parts that I believe interchange with the Y-Blk. I think for instance, that the pistons are the same as a 272.. Here locally, in the 60s a modified stock car racer used a 223 very successfully, in a 30s coupe.

Thanks guys, I'm going to try and keep this one under the radar on cash. I will probably drive the old six. I think it IS a 223?
I have priced some disk kits for it, but I don't know seems like I can do a fresh all around with just the drum setup. It only goes sixty with the wind behind me! The clutch doesn't engage til it's about an inch from all the way out.
Gonna start by a extreme power wash. I'll try to post a little without taking up valuable Y space.

The 223 uses the same piston that the 256 uses.

Ok, can I join the club now? About 1000lbs - as an F100 should be capable of doing. I made 2 similar trips. I was real surprised how well the engine did considering it's more performance oriented.
