I seen a picture of a Y block in craigslist and it has a cannister oil filter and 272 style valve covers and its advertised as a 292 or 312,I contacted them and they said it came out of a 64 dumptruck but it looks like a 272 to me.  Was the cannister oil filter used past 57 and if I were to look at it what will tell me its a 292 or 312.

There is really no way to tell by looking whether it's a 272,292 0r 312.If it's original to that 64 truck it's a 292.I think 60 was the last year for the 272 and 312's were never put in trucks at the factory.62 was the last year for the 312 and that was only in Mercurys.I'm not positive, but I think 59 was the last year for the canister oil filter. So,that engine has probably been changed at some time in the past. The only way to know for sure what it is is to take it apart.

I think the canister filter was used through '64 in trucks. If I'm not mistaken, my '61 manual does have instructions for replacing the canister style filter.

I wil go and look at it and get some casting numbers.

After some thought I think you're correct, Charlie. They did use the cannister all the way to the end of production on at least some of the trucks.

A small possible clarification on the 312s in a truck point. I don't know what year but apparently some 312s, possibly in late production, were installed in Canadian trucks. I've seen a Clevite catalogue dated 1976 that listed bearings for 312 truck engines.

Paul:

I think the confusion as to the 312 engine installed in Canadian trucks is that the Canadian 1957 Meteor & Ford Ranchero was available with a 312 engine. Very few were produced as to numbers Ford Canada archives may have that info.

The Ranchero is called a truck and the engine bearing mfg list 1957 Ford truck Canada only

312 engine.

Here is some info on that ``truck engine``

Our '60 F-600 had a canister type filter till I changed it.

From my expierence all the y blocks had cannister type oil filters from original, although on the later trucks they changed them to a  smaller diameter stepped in cannister that retained the normal bolt through the center  mounting.

Bill:

You have a good memory. I had forgot that until I read your post so I dug out my old Rotunda catalog and it lists cartridge filter for 223,262 and 292 trucks 61-64 as C1TZ-6731-D or Canadian part number CC1TZ-6731-D. That is a 1961 part number. Previous cartridge were larger, part number B2A-6731-A and were replaced by this 1961 number likely to fit the smaller canister.

all the y block trucks took the same cartridge.

Marvh,

I think us old blokes can almost remember our 1st birthday but yesterday is a lot harder!. Marvh, been involved with these engines over 40 yrs and there are many little individual differences between year models, we only had them in 55 -59  customline sedans, F series trucks to 64 and most were 272, we got the 292 in the 60 F600,s. I moved 8 years back and sold off 50 y blocks plus some FE,S and clevo,s, thinking i would be slowing down but seem more involved than ever! Our projects seem to be backing up on us somewhat. regards bill.

Thanks Bill:

Myself I started working on these yblocks in 1961 when going to high school then after high school worked full time for the local Lincoln, Mercury, Meteor dealership.

I was one of the very early group of Ford of Canada Registered Technicians. Have worked as HD mechanic also. Thanks for jogging the memory.

What is the truck engine out of?

Marvh, the engine was from a generator at an airbase where i used to live, it was a  reconditioned spare and came with the ford tag, FORD INDUSTRIAL ENGINE,  its a 332 lincoln, .020 rebore and ready to run, it had the large sparkplugs with screw on ends to take shielded plug wires that screwed onto the unusual distributor cap that had screw on terminals. I believe you had these in the large F series fire trucks etc.I have fitted rams horn truck headers , replacing orig manifolds.  I changed the lincoln dist gear onto later y block distributor, and with this edmunds 2 x4, rams horn headers,Cragar bellhousing and mkii lincoln valve covers, sure will be nice engine!. I like to post pics so other members can share some of these unusual engines and parts and have often suggested this. Thanks for your interest, best regards bill.

Yes , they did use cannister filters on trucks, all the way thru 64.
