My 56 fairlane 4 door will be arriving soon and it wont be long until I get to the exhaust system. Trying to get an idea of what works best on the ol' 292. One thing I will tell you is I have a set of Smithys [short ones] coming with it. Also a B manifold, 600 Holley and electronic ign [thanks to Skip , Kidcourier] So whats a good diameter pipe[s]? crossovers, muffler position etc. It has to perform and sound like a meaty Y block Also I purchased the tips that go through the bumper, how does that work? surely the whole system is not hard mounted ?? Cheers, Rob.

Shes a cherry! I got it of the second owner with 93,000 original miles...Even got an A/C that runs on ice. I just rang up "Larrys" and ordered the tips and when I asked about what diameter the tips were the guys said something like " It doesn't really matter as the pipe don't go in there" Mmm? It kinda confused me? If anyone has some photos of how they go and where the exhaust is mounted that would be great.

Talk wrench: I might be corrected on this but I think the seller was indicating the Tips are dummies. Due to corrosion problems later setups usually put a turn down on the end of the tail pipe & few inched before the bumper. Also, I hope you are on good terms with your neighbors, as short Smitty's are likely to be very noisy. You don't need really loud exhaust to get the unique sound of a Y block...

They didn't really make that clear and for the price I would want them working like original! Would not have bought them otherwise I would have liked the Smithys a little bigger either the mid-size or larger but my mate bought them for me from Moon. I was reading somewhere that if you have a cross over pipe that it runs better but it makes it a little quieter, maybe that would work well?? Any thoughts anyone?

A crossover made mine quieter.Search the forum for crossover pipes. There was a bit of discussion on here about this subject not long ago.

I am running 2 1/4" pipes. The muffler shop made a 2 X 2/14 reducers to connect to the header and slip into the thru bumper exhaust tips.

Hey Tom don't suppose you would have some pics to show how they did it ???

Talkwrench, Smitty's are good, but my favorite of late has been Porter mufflers. A lot like a Smitty but I think Clark thats owns the company builds them a little better. www.portermuflers.com You can even listen to what they sound like on their website. I would go 2 1/4" all the way back and mount the muffleres just ahead of the rear end so you don't have any vibration up under the cab area. If their too loud for you you can always add a cross pipe or balance tube between the two systems . A "X" pipe will make it quiter yet and probably enhance some low end torque.

Lets try that again, guess I can't spell, www.portermufflers.com

Just checked out the sound...nice.. They are steelpacks. Smithys are glasspacks arent they? If I remember they are a 2" pipe, so I guess they would be better further down the back perhaps run a 2 1/4" with a crossover and then 2" pipe after the Muffs . Hang on wouldn't the long length of pipe under the body be worse for vibration??

I don't have any pics but will try to remember to take a couple next time she's in the air. As for mufflers, a buddy had SpinTechs on his Mach 1 and, as I like to be a little different, decided on those over flowmaster and magnaflow that all of the scrubbies run.

The mufflers mounted at the rear of the car wil sound completely different from mufflers mounted in the original location. '60 Fords had mufflers mounted just in front of the rear bumper. Did not sound as good in my opinon.

Rob: I can't comment on the sound issue with rear mounting the mufflers, but keep in mind they will tend to run colder there & if you drive in a wet climate they will take a beating from splash..

Mmm Good points guys Im not really in what you would call a cold climate, and I doubt if it will ever be out in the rain.. Think read somewhere that a plain 2" system with the muffs about half way was the go. I am thinking that a 2 1/4" with cross over then into the short Smithys about half way and 2" from there on.. How come you haven't said anything yet Rick? Any boys from the Perth 49 - 59 club out there..

The long tailpipes are part of what gives the Y-block a unique sound. If the mufflers are mounted farther to the rear than the original location you lose some of the sound. That's why the Birds have a different tone than the big cars.

Hi Rob I haven't made any comments to date, as here in Perth we don't have access to Smithy's, though I believe they are similar to what used to sell here as "Hot Dogs". I must say that I agree with Paul and would mount the mufflers as far forward as possible and not worry about the cross over unless noise is an issue. The great thing about YBlocks is that they keep you guessing, as their exhaust note is so unique. You need to keep in mind that the local boys in blue take an instant dislike to us Old Hoons, though I must say that I have driven with straight through mufflers with nary a second glance from the constabulary for years. Looking forward to seeing the car in the flesh. Regards

Do Y Blocks Downunder run upside down? Gravity Sucks!! Interesting thought. Would sure make it easier to change cams in the vehicle as the lifters would stay toward the head!!

Well you know I wont do anything until it passes the first inspection Rick. Thought I would get a concensus about what most guys do and the fact that I have those short Smithys. I wouldn't be to worried about the cops they are far too busy chasing the "riceburners" that the kids have. Guess you might get a smart arse young copper wanting to prove something, I recon the old ones would just give the thumbs up
