Y-Guys Help! New engine in my F100 for 5-600 miles temp around 180/190. The last few days it would run normal and then start heating up. I've had to add water several times. Yesterday I put in a 160 thermostat that I had drilled 2, 3/16 holes, drove 4-5 miles ,with the a/c on, and I thought I had cured the problem, then it started heating up from 170 to 210 within a mile. Water bubbling out overflow tank. This a.m. I added 1/2 gallon water, drove 5-6 miles to work, temp never got above 170, but when I stopped ,at work, with engine idling, it's puking water out the overflow tank, temp still on 170.... How to determine if it's a head gasket, and which side? All suggestions appreciated...Columbus is getting close.... Bill

If it's a blown head gasket, you might find oil in the water or water in the oil and possibly steam coming out of the exhaust.

Charlie: Oil's clear, no steam out exhaust, idles fine. Would a compression test tell me? Which cylinder's are more prone to leak? Bill

It might tell you which one is blown. If you're not getting steam, then it's probably not being lost to a cylinder but it won't hurt to check compression.
I'm chasing my own gremlin today. Last night a strange noise came and within a mile it was gone. Running fine, though.

You could have the system pressure tested or even apply pressure to each cylinder at the spark plug hole.

Just a tought:
Have you checked the rad cap?

There is also a simple test using a low cost tester that sort of resembles a turkey baster. It uses blue fluid that turns yellow in the presence of HC. With the rad tank low enough so you don't contaminate the fluid in the bulb, you seal the rad top with the tester and squeeze the bulb a few times to let the rad gaseous mixture aereate the fluid. If it turns color, ya got hydro carbons in the rad. The 90% cause... head gasket. If the test is positive, do what was suggested. Pressurize each cyl with shop air and see which one bubbles. KW makes some good stuff called Metallic Block Sealer. I've witnessed it work, but more often in situations where the coolant is actually getting in the oil. It's a cheap try if your engine is older.

We've used that "turkey baster" here at work. Works good, pretty slick.

Y-Guys Help! New engine in my F100 for 5-600 miles temp around 180/190. Bill Billy, if you dont have any test gear as suggested, i would warm it up with rad cap on, then remove plugs, carefully inspecting for electrode discoloration and have someone spin engine over, looking for fine spray or liquid exiting plug hole, may help to identify which side to remove. good luck. regards bill.

Y-Guys Head gasket is Blown. I used a "Best" gasket and it's been the recomended gasket on this forum. Should I use it again(Glen, call me 205-664-3800) or try a Fel-Pro or? Reed thinks it detonated and pushed the fire ring into the water passage...that's what it looks like anyway. I going to clean it up and try again..... Thx for all the imput, Bill

Did it do that with or without turbo?

How full are you filling it. It was 106° here today. If a Y is filled to more than the middle of the tank when cold, it will puke on a day like today. What kind of shape is your radiator? Running an AC in weather like we have had over here demands a lot out of a radiator. I have seen impellers break off of water pumps. Have you checked the simple things like a slipping belt?

One of the quickest and easiest ways to check the head gasket is with the engine warm and running, radiator full to the top of the radiator neck watch to see if any bubbles come to the filler neck. The radiator has to be filled to the top.
If any bubbles come to the top or there is like a big burp of air out the filler neck there is no doubt the head gasket is blowing between the cylinders and a water jacket. You might even see some staining down the side of the block. To keep the radiator full whilst doing this test just trickle water into the filler neck.
This method works because the cylinders pump air at a pressure greater than 100psi (if the engine is any good) and it will be pumped/flushed through to escape out the filler neck.
Been there done that.

Bill: The fire ring moving to the water hole is exactly what I found on the Hurricane. It was also a Best gasket. It was #1 cylinder. When I pulled the left head, I saw no indication of gasket problems. I thought it was just a fluke, but after your experience, I wonder???

Bill, the gasket is in the mail, you should get it tomorrow. Glad that I could help and see you in Columbus.
