Y-Guys Help!   New engine in my F100 for 5-600 miles temp around 180/190.

               The last few days it would run normal and then start heating up.

                I've had to add water several times. Yesterday I put in a 160 thermostat

                that I had drilled 2, 3/16 holes, drove 4-5 miles ,with the a/c on,

                 and I thought I had cured the problem, then it started heating up

                 from 170 to 210 within a mile. Water bubbling out overflow tank.

                    This a.m. I added 1/2 gallon water, drove 5-6 miles to work,

                temp never got above 170, but when I stopped ,at work, with engine

                idling, it's puking water out the overflow tank, temp still on 170....

                         How to determine if it's a head gasket, and which side?

                All suggestions appreciated...Columbus is getting close....

If it's a blown head gasket, you might find oil in the water or water in the oil and possibly steam coming out of the exhaust.

Charlie:    Oil's clear, no steam out exhaust, idles fine. Would a compression

            test tell me? Which cylinder's are more prone to leak?

It might tell you which one is blown. If you're not getting steam, then it's probably not being lost to a cylinder but it won't hurt to check compression.



I'm chasing my own gremlin today. Last night a strange noise came and within a mile it was gone. Running fine, though.

You could have the system pressure tested or even apply pressure to each cylinder at the spark plug hole.

Charlie- That noise might of been your wife yelling at you and when you were a mile away you couldn't hear her any more.

There is also a simple test using a low cost tester that sort of resembles a turkey baster.  It uses blue fluid that turns yellow in the presence of HC.  With the rad tank low enough so you don't contaminate the fluid in the bulb, you seal the rad top with the tester and squeeze the bulb a few times to let the rad gaseous mixture aereate the fluid.  If it turns color, ya got hydro carbons in the rad.  The 90% cause... head gasket.  If the test is positive, do what was suggested.  Pressurize each cyl with shop air and see which one bubbles.   KW makes some good stuff called Metallic Block Sealer.  I've witnessed it work, but more often in situations where the coolant is actually getting in the oil.  It's a cheap try if your engine is older.
