This may be a little off topic, BUT I'm getting ready to tear in to my wife's 59 Edsel & want to upgrade the tranny while I'm there. It's a 292 with the stock 2 speed right now & I'd like some opinions on the best  tranny to put in with the least amount of trouble.

It's going to be a driver that she takes to shows.

Thanks in advance,

Butch: Is your Fordomatic the true 2 spd type or the more common 2 spd in Drive mode, c/w a seperate low gear?

If it's an automatic you want, the best options as far as I concerned is a C-4 or an AOD.

If you plan to make a lot of HP the C-4 can be made pretty tough. If its for cruising I vote AOD. I put one in my Vicky and love it. I can run a 4:10 rear gear on the street and still have econmomic highway driving. Chuck in NH

I put a C-4 in mine. I don't do that much freeway driving but lots of secondary roads. I love it and it was a simple install. Flat-O bell housing, new starter. Lokar kick down and a vacuum line to the intake, modified the stock rear mount cross member and thats it. I even used the original shift linkage (had to shorten it) and the column shift indicator line up fine.

FMX is the one i like and no kit to buy.

Moonshadow, what AOD did you use & did you buy a kit or make your own adapter?
By MoonShadow - 14 Years Ago
I used one from an early Mustang. 89 I think. Got the kit from Bendtsen's and fit was great. I did have the drive shaft remade with a different front yoke and longer. Chuck in NH

This is the same adapter I have for my 292 E4OD combo.

It fits great! Expensive though (isn't everything?)

I'm sure everybody is getting sick of this picture!!

I was looking at ditching the 3 sp and swapping over to an AT (It will make the wife happier to be able to drive it on a more regular basis--We all probably know how important that isBigGrin

Going through Bendsten's there is an adapter for the TH350.  I am not a purist, but want to keep the orig engine, but as far as trans, I know where I can get a boatload of TH350s and parts to choose from and parts $ and availability is more important than purist intentions.   Has anyone used that rig or how are Bendsten's in general.   and is it really pretty much plug and play?

The motor is mildly tuned and will pretty much stay south of 300HP.

Just an opinion, but I'd never go to the trouble you're talking about without getting an OD trans.  It took me a while to get the AOD sorted out in my street rod, but now I would'nt trade.  The .7 OD allows a 3.50, 3.70 or 3.89 gear for stoplight getty-up and great cruizing on the freeway.

I put a C4 out of a 68 V8 mustang in my 56 Vicky. I left the choice of the shift kit to the fellow that overhauled it for me. I told him whatever he chose was fine with me as long as it didn't bark the tires every time it shifted. That tranny made a whole different car out of it.

The early Ford AOD's are not overpriced. I paid $100 for mine and put a kit in it myself. Worst problem was getting the pressure cable adjusted but once it was done everything has worked perfectly. With the GM trans or even the C-4 you don't get the advantage of overdrive. I'ts generally recommended to stay away from the later E-AOD as they are electronic and the hook ups are more than a little challenge. Chuck in NH

Riz.  Based on your signature, you’re just down the road from Hebron, Ohio which is home to the Y-Block Shootout and the Ford Expo each Labor Day at National Trails Dragway.  Are you planning on making that event this year?
