A Day at the dyno

I was able to run my 333 yblock on the R&R dyno in suburban St Paul Mn yesterday. It was a good day no gremlins and no broken parts.. The y block endured repeated 7000 rpm pulls without complaint

I had estimated that Hilborn injection would add some torque and horsepower, and I was rewarded with an additional 27 hp (462)and 31 lb/ft of torque (421). The injector proved to be easy to tune and I was able to achieve a nice stable idle at 1200 rpm, which is not that much different than the carb and intake. This will prove to be a potent setup in a drag car. Currently at 1.38 hp/cu in , addition of Mummert heads should bump up the horsepower to nearly 500, that would be 1.5 hp/cu which is in big boy territory.

Ooops faux pas in the original attachment.... see below for data

Those are very nice numbers, Have you thought about straight alky?

Gary, Methanol would make a bit more power, but it's hard on fuel system parts and has some undesireable physical characteristics. E85 is cheap, available, does not need as much fuel system maintainence, and will take 12:1 compression

Very cool Royce!

Royce.  Great results.  Can’t wait to see that in a car going down the track.

Royce: Is the E85 out of the pump? What nozzle size and bypass pill did you end up with? Is your pump an "O"? Or is this top secert?
By RB - 14 Years Ago
Greg, no big secrets... Pump is a 0, nozzle 7AS , 80 pill , E-85 was out of the pump so it was actually probably E-70 this time of year. Had a knock sensor on the dyno and absolutely no detection of detonation

You will notice the pulls start at 4000.. The off idle was kind of rich in order to get the fuel right at the top end. We had to start at higher rpm to get a clean pull.. My secondary bypass needs some work to clean up the fuel delivery from 2-4000 rpm. I forgot my spring and shim kit so had to settle for the rich condition. That Pinto would look good with stacks poking out the hood

Royce

You have started something here. With all the interest and questions , I think there will be others running them soon.

We do not need a nine second Pinto. what if somebody hits it in the trunk!w00t

By Don Woodruff - 14 Years Ago
Frank what is going to be fast enough to hit it in the trunk?

You would not hit a stationary target would you?

Yes I know about the old jokes about Pintos. I still consider the Pinto wagon we bought new as one of the best cars I ever owned regardless of the lawers.

Royce: I ran injectors on my 300 six alterd years ago. I run methonal back then. The e85 thing would maybe need a differant slot in the barrel valve. I made some differant ones back then to clean up the low end. I`ve thought about E85 for some time, this could be interesting.

Greg I am running a Hilborn spool with no mods. I have another injector that has a Kinsler modified spool. It was set up to have better low speed fuel delivery, and it works nicely. I had hoped the secondary bypass would bleed off some fuel down low.. I need to check the poppet valve to see what pressure it unseats..
By pegleg - 14 Years Ago
Greg,

How about a photo and details of the Altered! I have wanted to build one of those 300's since I read Ak Millers article on the Mustang Six a hundred years ago.Tongue You'd think E-85 or E-70 +/- would be able to use a bigger bypass pill than Methanol. After all it's 15% or more gasoline. Just out of curiosity, what plugs did you run Royce?

By jepito - 14 Years Ago
one thing to try is a stumble valve from Engler. It's like a poppet that is backwards. Bleeding off fuel in low rpm until the pressure rises and then closing. This would allow a smaller pill so you don't get lean up top. The spool should only be controlling part throttle.
By RB - 14 Years Ago
Frank I ran an Autolite 124s I normally run AR 32 or 33 but they were backordered.

Jepito, The secondary bypass on my systen uses a can with a poppet valve that releases pressure at about 40 lb. It is timed with a hole in the spool to dump pressure at a specific throttle opening corresponding to 2-3000 rpm. Once the spool moves past that hole then the bypass is deactivated and the system gets full pressure.. To set my barrel valve. I use a leakdown tester and adjust the arm on the barrel valve to where I get about 10% leakdown. Then I start the engine and adjust the barrel valve to a clean idle.. Then I adjust richer until there is no stumble when you whack the throttle

Here is a link to the video of the best pull at last weeks dyno session

Ran it up to 7000 rpm and made 462 horse and 421 torque

Thanks Barry L for recording it..I was too hyper to run a camer

Seems I am a dunce here someone give me a refresher
By Y block Billy - 14 Years Ago
Royce, Your an ace!

Couple questions? Is that a YB and not an LYB? what is with the breather in the fuel pump opening and how come some setups I have seen the stacks are in a row, are all the Y block hilborn's side by side like that for the ports or are there differen't styles or do they just turn them sideways for small blocks. and last but not least, will we see this at columbus?

By RB - 14 Years Ago
Billy, This is a Ford Y block. Lincoln is physically bigger with a conventional port layout. Think 351 W vs 390 as physical size reference

Yes, I used the fuel pump mount to attach a breather.. No sense in cutting original T Bird valve covers. Also the dyno operator is able to easily measure ring seal by using just one vent.

Original Hilborns are mounted in line with the engine and use 2 throttle shafts per side. They are rare expensive and kind of small for a healthy engine. I modified a scrub system and mounted it crosswise. I had to fabricate a manifold to achieve this. The scrub uses 2 3/16 throttle bores where the orginal y block injector uses about 1 3/4
By Y block Billy - 14 Years Ago
Royce,

I knew that was a conventional Y, I was just being a little sarcastic since you have a few LYB's. That is quite a great idea running those scrub hillborn's, should make for some cheaper avenues and more power than the originals. and they look much better on a Y anyway.
