Silly question.. how do you get the gear shifter knob off [my 56 auto].. I thought they would just screw off but mine wont budge..?

The lever has a series of grooves around the shaft and the knob seems to be molded somehow onto the lever.  It is probably not possible to remove the knob without damage.  Maybe some heat would help.

MAybe they are glued on ?? Im sure I had seen them for sale in the Mac's cataloue, thought an easy replacement... Perhaps you need to wait for them to fall off w00t

First, wrap a rag around the shaft at the base of the knob. Now, put a pair of pliers around the rag and then use a small hammer (10 or 12 oz. ) to tap the pliers against the knob. That is what always worked for me. To put it back just tap it back on with a small plastic or dead blow hammer. Tom

They are very difficult to remove without damage!  The rag wrapped around the old knob and a bit

of twisting and pulling with your choice of pliers will remove it, but it probably won't look good when

you open the rag!

Why are you removing it? Chuck

Why remove it ?..good question. I was thinking about puting a custom handle on it, maybe I could make something kool... But it was just a thought, so wanted to ask the question as I did try to get it off to see whats there. I take it that the indicator stalk is the same?

Has anyone seen something kool or unusual as a gear knob??

They are about the same. Most of the old custom knobs fit on the shaft by themselves and used a set screw to hold them. They always seemed to be working loose. Chuck
