I would like to use this trans. I know that low gear will be deep with my 3:50 gears. I also know that I won't have as much of an RPM drop in overdrive as a V8 trans.

Has anyone used the 4cyl unit and had success. I own it and would like to use it in place of my top-loader 4spd.

Thanks

Jim

I put one behind a 302 in a Mustang and it worked out pretty well.  It turned out to be more rugged than I thought it would be.  I had a 3:08 rear, so it did ok in 1st gear.  The 3:55 shouldn't be a whole lot worse.

I would be concerned about durability, but if you are not planing on pushing it hard it should work. Used to use 6 cylinder transmissions back in the day with a 3.10 rear end and they took off great. Broke to easily the way I drove it though.

Jim, all the gears and bearings are the same strength its just the additional gear reduction from the input shaft to the cluster gear that puts more load on the gears and reduces the rating.

You will need to make up a special pilot bearing. The 4cyl input shaft has a .590" diameter pilot while the V6 & V8 are .668".

Best way is to get a 4 cyl pilot bearing and remove the needle bearing portion. Bore a Y-Block pilot so it will press in. As I recall there is about .002" interference to hold it in place. Best to measure the diecast piece it mounts in for the 2.3L so you know the correct fit.

I believe Tim and Bill (Yehaabill) are both using a 4cyl variant behind strong motors with no issues yet.
