I will be looking at a couple 292 short blocks this weekend. One is a C2AE-6015C and the other is a ECZ-6015A. Over the phone, the owner said the main caps were EBU for both blocks.

My questions are:

Is there a chance one of these could have a steel crank? If so, How do i identify a steel vs. cast crank?

Is there anything else about these blocks i should be looking for?

C2AE is a possible candidate for forged steel crank. We have one in use... Wink

The steel crank is the only one that has a completely smooth outside diameter rear crank flange. Also, one of the counterbalance weights will be marked C1TE. And, the first two counterweights are at the same angle relevant to the snout (like the first two 312 crank counterweights).

I have a crank listed on ebay right now with 2 photos if you want to search for it. There may be others.
