HELP ford 9 inch rear end

help Im confused I thought 57 and 58 rearends were 9 inch/ but the 57ford.com site says that they are 8 3/4 but a 9 inch carrier can be installed/ and that true 9 inch didn't come out till 1960/I need to get this cleared up before fri night/Im driving up to lincoln nebraska Sat to look at 2 57 and 2 58 rear ends and now Im not sure what this person is selling and up till this afternoon I thought that they were 9 inch rear ends HELP

Just so we are clear on what you are asking. The 57 58 59 Ford rear axle housing are what you need to put under your 54 55 56 Ford car. They were all 28 spline small bearing housing. They will except either an 8 3/4 or 9 inch pumpkin. So is that the question? Pete

PS the 58 has a smoother rear cover (in my opinion,) no dimple.

57 was the first year for the 9". Station wagons and rancheros got the larger axle and carrier bearings my supercharged car also has the larger bearing version.

My 57 rearend I put in my 56 crown came out of a custom 1957 ford factory 312 T-85 overdrive large bearing and I think the rearend was a 9 inch but being it had some teeth stripped I put a new 9 in limited slip.
