Just so we are clear on what you are asking. The 57 58 59 Ford rear axle housing are what you need to put under your 54 55 56 Ford car. They were all 28 spline small bearing housing. They will except either an 8 3/4 or 9 inch pumpkin. So is that the question? Pete PS the 58 has a smoother rear cover (in my opinion,) no dimple.

57 was the first year for the 9". Station wagons and rancheros got the larger axle and carrier bearings my supercharged car also has the larger bearing version.

My 57 rearend I put in my 56 crown came out of a custom 1957 ford factory 312 T-85 overdrive large bearing and I think the rearend was a 9 inch but being it had some teeth stripped I put a new 9 in limited slip.

Kansas, here is a link to a site with information on how to identify a Ford 9". http://www.kevinstang.com/Ninecase.htm
Maybe you can look at this and then talk to the guy in Nebraska before you make the trip.
