Is it better to have a cooling system with expansion? With the expansion as well be cooler be filled right up to the cap. But if you have an expansion tank without straw in the bottom of the well, the pressurized cap sitting on the expansion. But if you have a straw in the expansion tank, make sure that you have a water level of this so it sucked air into the cooling system. Here you can easily have pressurized cap on the radiator. Thinking I right here? Normally you should well water level to be about 10-15 mm above the cells in the top of the radiator when you do not have the expansion. Abundance is pushed out.

Hi, OK, if i understand you we are talking about what I call a coolant recovery tank. This is for a radiator with a closed system. It has a pressurized radiator cap that exposes an overflow tube that connects to the coolant recovery tank.

Since this system depends on syphon action to move water(coolant) back and forth it must be air tight. As the water in the radiator heats it expands and pushes excess water into the tank. If the tank is already full it spills out the top.

After the motor cools the water volumn contracts and the vacuum in the tube pulls water ( coolant) back into the radiator. It is a good thing to have as you don`t lose any coolant. Pete

To use a coolant recovery tank it does not have to be a sealed system. I have one on my 48 Ford with a 302 and it works as you described, but the system is not really closed as it has an overflow drain coming out of the recovery tank (I use an aftermarket cylinder type tank).

The level of the water in the radiator should be about an inch below the bottom part of the neck.
