Any of you '56 Ford folks that have time I need to know the location where outside mirrors bolt on to the doors. How far back from the front of the door & how far down from the window sill... Thanks....

I am not trying to change your mind about the door location for the mirrors, just thought I would share something with you. When I bought my 56 Customline Victoria, it had what I think was a dealer mounted side view mirror on the drivers side front fender. There were no holes at all in the doors, not even patched in holes. I thought that the mirror location on the forward end of the drivers front fender was nuts and I definitely was not going back to that. On the other hand, I had no template for a door mounted location and wasn't sure if sheet metal screws were good enough to hold securely over time. It took me 3 years to restore (resto-mod) the car and after it was all painted, I realized I never addressed the side view mirror issue, so I started driving the car without them. This became a problem for obvious reasons. One weekend I took the car up to the CVA Northwest Regional meet in Puyallup, WA. Some Canadians came down with their 56's (Meteor's and other Canadian Fords), and one of those cars used 3" peep mirrors mounted to the vent window (division bar). It was simple and it worked, so I copied his idea. That was 4 years ago and I'm still using them. Just sayin'Tongue

Carl,

How about posting a picture of the template here? I put my mirrors on by memory and obviously got them wrong. The drivers side is ok but I can't even see the passenger side. Also they seem to vibrate a lot. Chuck

The template shows the mirrors for the body mounted ones going on the doors. I just mounted them on my 56 crown and can help with the location if Carl can't find his template. I believe if their pulled back an inch or so from the original location away from the front edge they would be more useful especially the passenger side.

Rono, when I got mine it didn't have any outside mirrors on it. I had clamp on (peep) mirrors clamped to the door under the wrap around of the windshield. They work OK but it's getting painted now & I don't want them back on there. A lot of Fairlanes have mirrors on the doors. I have seen them up on the fenders but I don't want that either.

Rono, if you could can you post a picture of your peeps. I too had one mounted on my drivers door at the top and it chipped the paint. I have since mounted a stock (repro) on the drivers side door only. By the way, don't buy a repro from Carpenter's, their chrome of late SUX...

Guys;

Sorry for the delay in responding. I am still out on a motorcycle road trip and using the wife's computer that does not have my picture files. I'll be back tomorrow night and post some pictures on Tuesday.

If you are looking for repro mirrors you might want to check Bob Drake.I have seen his items and they look to be good quality and the sell for less than Carpenter.

The mirror location on the door from the template is using the front screw as a guide. From top edge of door locate screw position with a pencil mark 1 1/2". go straight to front edge of the door and back up the mark 2 1/2". Tape the mirror to the door for location to see if you like how it looks and if it works for seeing angles for safety. Do the same for the passenger side as well, you would want the sides to match. I put the location on my sunliner at 2"s from the top edge and 5 1/4"s from front edge which worked better for me but do what works for you. Hope this helps.Cool

I forgot to add make sure the mirror does not interfere with your vent window.

EJ I hope this answers some of the questions you had.

It does Gary, thanks a ton. I ordered mirrors from LeBaron Bonney....

Okay, just got home today after 850 miles through the Adirondack Mountains of upstate NY. Beautiful country and the bikes ran great. So, here are some pictures of my peep mirror set-up. My mistake in saying that they attach to the division bar...they actually mount to the vent window frame. If you do plan on trying this, use peep mirrors that have at least 2" long or longer mirror stems so that they are out far enough from the car. On the passenger side I also used a small convex mirror to expand the view. http://forums.y-blocksforever.com/Uploads/Images/8ee56b4a-72f0-40bb-b760-a4a1.JPGhttp://forums.y-blocksforever.com/Uploads/Images/ab6f1976-7f81-44a6-a91d-9855.JPGhttp://forums.y-blocksforever.com/Uploads/Images/17d5ab1c-7b1e-4c0b-8fd3-1c54.JPGhttp://forums.y-blocksforever.com/Uploads/Images/5a1c5e49-8c63-41ea-821c-c3fd.JPGhttp://forums.y-blocksforever.com/Uploads/Images/64e6f868-d89c-44d7-be97-15cc.JPG

Don't know if the following will help on a 55 or 56 Ford. (clearance may be an issue?) But I was able to mount similar mirrors to the ones in the posted photos, on a 57 hardtop car, by attaching them on the lower forward area of the door in front of the A pillar. The previous mirrors were mounted ahead on the fenders and I found the passengers side mirror in particular, virtually useless. Mounted on the front area of the door, they work reasonably well, although if they could be bigger it would be helpful..

Rono, thanks for posting the pictures. I don't think that would work on my Ranch because it is painted in the mounting area. I believe only Hardtops and Ragtops have chrome (stainless?) in that area.
