on the water pump just behind the pulley there is a hole drilled through to the shaft,i can see it rotating. whats this hole for? lube maybe?
should it be plugged to stop dirt ingress?

I've been told that is a "seep hole". When the shaft bearing starts to go in the pump water will start to seep from that hole. It is then time to repair or replace the pump.

          Ron's correct as usual. Don't plug it. There will always be a  small amount of "weepage" in any seal. Especially one that sits for extended periods of time like your truck.
