I was told by a tech at NAPA that they no longer make Y block fuel pumps with glass covers over the filter. My 1956 F-250 had one of these filters with a paper cartrige changable filter. All the filters for that listing were the wrong size. He looked under F-600 and found NAPA 3943 which is the correct gasket. NAPA crosses with FRAM CG7 for anyone who is looking.
Now the sad part of the story is he told me when this pump quits working there is no replacement that looks like it. I spent hours polishing and cleaning it up, hoping I would have its nostalgic look on my Y block forever. I even wanted to find another one like it to put on my 292.
Is it true they are obsolete and not even rebuild kits are available? The pump was made in USA by CAR BURE TER with the "BURE in smaller text. It has a number embossed on it: O-1583, it has L5 embossed on it, it has a couple of X's embossed on it. It has a 6 embossed on it. Its made of cast aluminum with a glass fuel bowl showing the filter.
Can anyone tell me if they are non replaceable when they fail?

I also have had good luck with fuel pump kits from Then and Now Automotive. Cheers

Ditto on "Then and Now Automotive" ... I have rebuilt several of our Y block fuel pumps with his kits and they work very well. Remember that those fuel pumps can be completely disassembled. I dont' think it was until the early 60's that fuel pumps became "once and done" for the backyard mechanic.

You do not want to use a paper filter with Ethanol. The alcohol will dissolve the glue holding it together with obvious results.

You probably know the the Car Bure ter is a Carter pump. I would check with the old car parts suppliers to see if the pump is still available (NAPA carries a lot of stuff but not everything). Probably made by Airtex now.
The Tbirds used a remote filter with a replaceable element and had the glass bowl. I wouldn't be surprised if that element fit the sedan's pump. It only cost 5.95 to find out.
I know you want the original look, but the FE pumps interchange with the Y Blocks. And certain ones have a filter (that points down) with a replaceable element.

Thanks Paul,
Then and now has the rebuild kit. Im still waiting to hear if they have access to a glass bowl. Not sure what you mean by an FE pump but I would spend the $5.95 to find out. What is the source for that? That glass bowl is a replacement part?

The 55-56 T bird inline filter eliment will not fit in the car fuel pump bowl. The bird filter is wider than the pump bowl, save the $5.95
