This is a bit off the mark - but I'm going to ask anyway - will the single groove water pump pulley off an old 289 (or even some GM product) fit the snout of my 312?

Water pump pulley bolt pattern on the Y is the same as the FE and 351C engines.  The 5.0 engines had a larger diameter pattern but those are serpentine belt engines.  I don’t have a 289 or 302 waterpump laying loose but suspect it’s the same as the Y as far as the pulley bolt pattern goes.  Like has been mentioned, it's then a matter of finding an appropriate pulley and spacing it if necesary so it aligns with the other accessories.

It is sensing the air coming off the radiator. As the coolant temp rises the air coming through the radiator will increase in temp.

Daniel:

Some I have seen have a thermostatic coil on the front side of the clutch, looks like a choke thermostat coil.  It opens and closes an orifice as needed.  Also, I seem to remember from years ago about clutch fans that had a fluid that acted the opposite of oil, it got thicker as it got hotter, thereby driving the fan faster.  I have a stainless steel flex fan on my 427 galaxie, it seems to do fine and has less weight for the water pump to carry.  Of course it is rpm sensistive only.

Please bear with me:

I notice the Casco clutch fan is labeled "thermal". Maybe I'm missing something obvious, but how does the clutch know what temp. the coolant is?

the bolt pattern might be the same but where the belt groove is in relation to your other grooves(alighnment) might be different.

What I have done is use a water pump pulley off a 55 Ford V8 engine and a four blade 56 fan. The 55's had a 3 blade fan and smaller WP pulley so more RPM on water pump. I then had to change to a different fan belt. The 55 fan belt will not fit as the 55 generator pulley is different diameter than a 56 generator pulley. You will have to get a belt from an auto supply store. A truck engine WP pulley will also work. The truck WP pulley is in between the 55 pulley and the stock 56 pulley.

I'm looking to jack up the pump RPM without spending my kids inheritance on the one from Concours. The prospect of relocating the mounting flange a bit on the pump shaft (to keep things lined up with the alternator) doesn't terrify me too much - but......it might not be possible. Could be it'll be difficult to do with what I have to work with and I'll have to go another way.

Gary - is your clutch fan set-up rigged for "temperature release" - or "speed release"?

Hey Bill;   I'm running a fan clutch on my 55 Bird (from Casco) and the smaller water pump pulley from Concours.  Both work great. Well worth the cost.

God Bless
