...on the [driver's] side there are several spots for plugs and there are already 6 plugs in the block.
Location of the five (5) 1/4 inch pipe thread oil galley hole plug locations on the driver's side of the block:
Measured from the front oil galley plug distance plug gives access to this face of the bare block above the oil pan main bearing drilled oil to the center of plug hole mounting surface feed hole
5/8 inch 3 inches front main bearing 5 7/16 inches 3 inches 2nd main bearing (this is the plug location that John mentioned as the usual location for the original FoMoCo oil pressure sending unit) 9 7/8 inches 3 inches 3rd main bearing 18 1/4 inches 3 1/2 inches 19 7/16 inches 3 inches 5th main bearing
IF the above plugs (and the three located at the front and rear face of the block) have NOT already been removed, I'd encourage you to remove them to permit thorough cleaning of ALL of the oil galley and ALL of the drilled feed holes that go to the engine main bearing saddles, the oil pump, and the oil filter.
NOTE: access to the oil galley drilled feed hole to the No. 4 main bearing saddle is through the large hole that secures the oil filter adapter to the side of the block... _________________________________
John Mummert at http://www.ford-y-block.com/assemblyerrors.htm recommends the following to remove the eight (8) oil galley plugs: Oil gallery plugs. Remove all oil plugs and the oil filter adapter before having your block hot tanked. I’ve had the best luck by drilling out the center of the oil plug, leaving the hex. After heating the plugs with a torch they come right out. I have never damaged a block using this method. _________________________________ You're correct, Ray. There are other threaded holes on the driver's side of the block besides the 5 oil galley plug holes.
John (Hoosier Hurricane) has mentioned the threaded hole immediately under the front water jacket soft plug. As he mentioned, this hole is also threaded for 1/4 inch pipe thread and is for installing a petcock to drain engine coolant from the driver's side of the block. A threaded hole is located in the same position on the passenger side of the block also for installing a petcock to drain engine coolant from the passenger side of the engine block. NOTE: This threaded hole is ~4 1/8 inches above the oil pan mounting surface.
Mention was also made of the two threaded blind holes located on each side of the block for attaching the engine motor mounts. These are one-above-the-other with 7/16x14 N.C. thread. One of these is 3 1/4 and the other 5 inches above the oil pan mounting surface.
IF you have a pre-PCV-use engine block, you will have a good-sized hole on the drivers side of the block (1 inch dia.? toward the front of the block) with two threaded holes on either side of it. These threaded holes are for fastening the breather unit to the side of the block just above the oil pan and below the oil galley. The holes are through-the-block and threaded 5/16x18 with both located 2 inches above the the oil pan mounting surface. _________________________________
Having never used hex head pipe plugs on the oil galley, I agree completely with John. Be careful that there is not interference between the two plugs used on the back of the block and a flywheel or flex plate assembly. _________________________________

I found brass Allen socket plugs at a hardware store that carries brass fittings like Eaton's Weatherhead. They are also readily available on line like Ebay.

There is one hole on each side, 1/4 inch pipe, where the water drain cocks go. All the oil passage plugs are in a straight line. The hex head plugs should not be a problem except at the rear of the block, they might interfere with the flywheel. The oil pressure sender is typically in the hole in front of the motor mount.

Do you happen to have any pictures of the locations cause on the side there are several spots for plugs and there are already 6 plugs in the block. So something is not adding up if you said there are only 8 plugs. Also I have tried to get the plugs locally all that napa has are ones with a hex head. is there a clearance issue on any of them on the side if I were to use hex head instead of inverted Allan head plugs?

To continue what Charlie posted, the plugs on the front face and rear of the block, at the oil pump, are 3/8 NPT size. The ones along the side are 1/4". One of the side holes is not plugged, that's where the oil sender goes.

Oil galley plugs needed: (8) Locations: - Driver's side of engine block going front to back...
- one on either side of the crankcase vent opening or the place where the opening would have been drilled on the later blocks - one between the side motor mount location and the oil filter mounting location - two directly above where the oil pump is mounted, to the right of the engine oil filter mounting location - two on the driver's side of the crankshaft rear seal location and above where the oil pump mounts - one on the driver's side immediately adjacent to the one next to the crankcase vent opening previously described above NOTE: Consider purchasing the small parts kit that John Mummert offers. SPK includes needed brass freeze plugs (4), oil galley plugs with correct pipe thread (8), cam end plug (1), replacement Woodruff keys for crank and timing gears (3), and replacement cylinder head to engine block locating dowels (4). When I took my 292 block to the machine shop they took out all my oil gallery plugs so I am
Not sure how many there are can anyone help me with this? And where are they located?
