You've possibly stirred up a Hornet's nest with an oil question.. You may get a dozen opinions, some of which have little relevence.. Anyway, based on info on this site, going way back, Charley's recommendation is a good one. Don't use oils that have the "starburst" gear on the label, they are nearly all intended for roller valve train engines with full emission controls. Apparently, most 10-40 and up oils have sufficient anti-scuff additives for the Y-Block..

There are plenty of oils with adequate zinc and phosphorous. SM oils with a viscosity rating of 40 (10w40, 20w50, etc.) or more are what you want. No need for additives. If you have any doubt, ask your favorite brand of oil what they recommend for your engine.
10w40 should be good.

What is the best wieght oil to use in the y block? Also I hear that the modern oil does not have as much zddp as what the engine needs Is there some that have more Zddp or is there an additive you can use or do you need to add anything? I was looking online and some that I was looking at had 1200 ppm is that enough?
