Hi ,
Im a Newbee on this site [from Ipswich, Australia] needing help!!
    I have a 54 Mercury with a 272 Y block engine...I have a hunch that the T C Cover is from a 256 mercury .
I have a new petrol pump [suitable for a 272] but it won't fit because it is too close to the water pump outlet,
and the shaft goes in the opposite way to the one that was on the car, when purchased,
Can anyone tell me if there is any difference between the 256 and the 272 T C Cover? Or can it be that the water
pump fitted to this car is from a 256?

    Thanks for your help....Brian

Brian, the water pump is smaller on a 239, it only fits a 239 timing cover. I believe the same holds true for a 256. I've never seen a 256 to compare. The 239 fuel pump has a straight arm, I believe the 256 also does.

Brian:

I believe you are right.  You have a 239/256 timing cover and water pump.  As Dennis noted, the fuel pumps are different from the larger engines.  If you want to use the pump you have, you'll have o change the timing cover and water pump.  Then you'll find the lower radiator hose will be too small to go onto the water pump.

Hi Again,
If I replace the existing 256 timing cover for a 272 timing cover, will it fit on, and will i have to change the SUMP as well.
Thanks..... Brian

Yes, the timing cover will bolt on with no changes.  The 272 water pump will have to be used also.  Then there is a difference in lower radiator hose sizes, the 272 is larger.
