Ray,

You might try putting a 3/8 belt on the 1/2" generator and/or water pump pulleys (if that's what you have)  and see if they fit ok.

(let me add that I think you actually DO have the narrow groove pulleys unless your engine came out of a 55.  (there was no 292 for trucks in 55 btw)

If your truck & engine is a 63, it should have the narrow pulleys unless someone changed them.

The damper I offered you came off the 1960 292 I am putting in my 55 F-600. Right after I had it rebuilt by the "DD"  I found the 2-groove damper (that I'll also have him rebuild)

It would be MUCH easier to get 3/8" generator and water pump pulleys for your truck than find a 1/2" damper I would think.  If you need a 1/2" pulley damper, and you can find one, I know the "Damper Doctor" can rebuild it for you.  They're pretty rare though.......

I don't have the one that came off my original 239 V-8.  The guy that bought the engine from me wanted it along with the very rare high-mount water pump and fan mount.......!

Ok,

I went out in the shop and actually found a damper (for a 56 272 with high mount fan) that I also decided not to use.  (It's not the one that came off my 239 though)

It DOES have a wide  groove for the fan (only I think).  The other one is the damper I took off my '60 292 and had the Damper Doctor reman.
I used a tape so you can make dimension comparisons to what you have.

The one on the left has a wide fan belt groove for a "High-Mount" fan.    The painted & sleeved one is black from the rebuild by the DamperDoctor.

Hope the dimensions assist you in figuring out what you need......the tape is graduated in 1/16th inch

Cheers,

Rick

If I put a 3/8 inch crank pulley on Will a 3/8 belt work on a 1/2 inch water pump and generator pulley or will they bottom out?

Your '63 is 51 years old and can have any parts on it by now.  The damper could have been swapped.  It could have an earlier engine installed.  Any number of things.

I will add to what Ted said, that the timing indications are different for some dampers, so you need to make sure the damper is identical to yours or ensure that you get the damper and matching timing pointer.  If those are mixed up, you may not be able to time the engine.

Than why on my 63 pickup do I have a pulley with a width of 1/2? Where is that measurement taken at?

Up through 1956, the belt widths on the car dampers were ½”. Starting in 1957 and including the pickups, the belt sizes at the damper were downsized to 3/8”.  Other than this, the dampers are interchangeable.

Is there a differance on the vibration damper for a 63 pickup compared to the other years. Mine is 1/2 inch wide on the inside at the top of the grove. I have heard that the 54,55,56 were wider. Did the cars have differant width than the truck? I hAve noticed that the mercury ones look differant on the Back side but are they the same for all y blocks?
