Somehow I misplaced the oil pump gasket for my y block i am building so I decided to make one but i remember from the new one i had that there was large openings cut around each holes of the oil pump maybe to fit other ones. My question is if I make one I can just cut around each hole the same size as each hole? thanks or are the cut outs in the gasket bigger in order to lubricate the pump shaft

Two smaller than stock holes in the gasket should suffice. One hole for the distributor drive and another for the oil passage hole. Just make sure that the oil passage hole at least matches both the oil pump and the block passage as these two may not align perfectly with each other. I've a feeling that the holes in the factory gaskets are larger to accommodate any slight distortions that may be in the pump or block face to facilitate a better seal but this is pure speculation on my part.
