I have been looking for an alternative to rebuilding my Fordomatic which has been giving problems until it warms up.As suggested on this Forum likely seals etc getting hard from age.I located a rebuilt Fordomatic which was done 8 Years ago and never installed.Been sitting on a Dolly in the guys Garage. He says it cost him $1200 8 Years ago.He has been dropping the Price due to no interest until now where its priced at $400.00 including Convertor. Is this worth a gamble for that price or should I be concerned because it has been sitting for 8 Years?Opinions? Thanks. He also has a complete 292 sitting in his Garage. He owns a 56 Customline 4dr(Standard Transmission)..

Have you considered going to another trans, such as a C4 or maybe an AOD? I put a C4 in my 56 Bird and am very happy with it. I used the stock downshift mechanism (with some modification to connect it to the C4).

It's a new rebuilt that never been run with converter for $400? What is the problem here? If you don't buy it give me the guys phone number, I know where there is a really nice 56 Ford Fairlane sedan for 4 grand that needs a trans.

Mark. If it has the converter and the transmission seems to be rebuilt and you get to pull the pan to do a visual check. Then GO FOR IT. Pete
PS Ask to see the receipt for the re-build.

Have you thought about going FMX???? Before I changed my 56 over to a 5 speed I ran an FMX. Far better transmission than the "Slush-O-Matic" and a true liquid cooled piece. Not to mention, practically a straight bolt in with only minor mods (even looks stock) and a LOT better performance!!!!
I love the smell of burning rubber in the morning!

re the 55 56fordomatics these wher good transmitions if rebuilt properly, and setup the corect way. it was easey to get low in drive and they in my experiance could handel a 312.55 56 still had air cooled torqu a slight neg. but torques came apart and could be worked on easly. so i say buy the rebuild with being sure it was rebuilt
