OK, i got the tach out and took off the lens , i found the little brass hole and put
a drop of 3in 1   in it . The needle has some paint off it . Does the orange needle
come off easy? I can but a new one at NPD . Does it just pull off some how? Or should
i just leave it alone?
thanks again

Best to paint it without removing, unless you're sure to get it back in the same place!

I just repainted all my gauge needles (even the white ones) with a bottle of orange Tester's model paint I picked up at the hobby shop. Made for a nice improvement. I soaked my tach with Remoil (gun oil) works like a new, now.

you may need to have the Tach looked at too. Has to be reason why that end broke off.

The cable just pulls out (you may have to wiggle it out) once the bracket bolt is out.  The gear may not come out with the cable, but it should  pull out easy.
While you are back there, take out the tach.  There is a little oil hole on the top that should be lubricated with a light oil, like 3-IN-One.  Its not always the cable that is the problem, could be the tack needing lube.  I had the same problem with the tach in my 56, although the cable did not break.

I disconnected my tach cable from under the dash because it was screaming. I followed it to the distributor and the is
a bracket holding it on. Can i just un-screw the bracket and pull it out or is there other stuff in there that will fall in the
engine? I am going to replace the cable because the tip broke off under the dash. I have a 56 Thunderbird 312 engine.
  Thanks guys
