I don't mean to mislead you.  You don't have to use the original indented Ford style valley pan.  The '56 Ford over-the-parts-counter 2x4 power pack kits from Ford used a totally FLAT steel plate with an oil fill tube brazed to it. 

A flat valley pan from John Mummert or something from Speedway (?) or Charlie Price's Vintage Speed would suffice, too.  Smile

Charlie thank you very much! I did not know about the valley pan difference.I will be using Edelbrock 500 cfm carbs since this is going in a hot rod rather than any sort of resto.

I haven't looked at the links Ted suggested, but here are a couple of comments
- your 2x4 intake manifold was used on '57 'E' code 312 passenger cars and Thunderbirds
- one estimate is that Ford had ~5,500 (?) produced!
- this intake cannot be used with the usual production Ford valley pan;  Google eBay motors and search for item 381060296851to see an original Ford 'E' valley pan with the indentation in the cover.
- IF you try to bolt your intake down with a usual FoMoCo valley pan, you will break one or two mounting 'ears' off the front of the intake
- Ford equipped these manifolds with a special series of  Holley 4000 carburetors;  these are similar to '56 FoMoCo Holley 4000 carbs, BUT have secondary vacuum balance tubes, different primary and secondary jetting, reduced spring tension on the 'economizer' (power) valves, restrictor brass washers on the primary booster venturi clusters, and no low speed to high speed transition circuits.  The original 'E' carbs were also different from the '56 FoMoCo Holley 4000s in the vacuum circuitry to supply the new combination centrifugal and vacuum advance distributor.
- others on this site have used newer carb combinations on this intake very successfully.
- Ford chose to hook the two carbs in tandem, not progressively
- Virtually any dual quad or three two intake manifold will perform more satisfactorily than an Offenhauser y-block 3x2 intake based upon the dyno tests Ted has previously run.  The problem was apparently the intake porting design.

Ted thank you very much for the help.I traded an Offy 2X3 manifold for this one and figured I was better off  than before.I have a 57 312 engine going together and was going to use this setup on it.

The ECG-D dual quad intake is the 1957 ‘E’ code intake.  Here’s a link to a past thread which covers it in more detail.

I was at the turkey rod run this past weekend and bought a Y block 2x4 intake manifold.It is an aliminum manifold and is for the old,small base carbs.It has a Ford PN on the bottom and no other markings. PN is ECG9424-D. Can anyone tell me anything about it? I was just looking for a 2X4 manifold and this is the only one I can find.Thanks.
