So to start off I'm pretty new to the y blocks my son got a 64 f100 custom for his 12th birthday from his grandpa aside from that the motor runs but is missing the dip stick is it possible to buy a universal one to use until the one I ordered comes in?

Is it just the dipstick itself that is missing or the tube as well? If you are just missing the dipstick, one of the guys on this site that has a truck could probably give you the length the dipstick needs to be if you wanted to try to find one. But If you already ordered one I would wait until it arrives.

Actually, you could use any old dipstick and make the marks yourself.  Just make sure the dipstick is long enough.

When changing oil, put in 4 quarts.  Run the engine so you have oil pressure.  Then shut it off, wait 5 minutes or so and insert the dipstick.  Mark it (with  notch?) where the oil line is.  Then add the remaining quart, do the same thing thing running the engine, shut it off and mark the dipstick with another mark.  This is your fill line.  If you take 6 quarts, do the same thing - just use 5 and 6 quarts to make the marks.

The majority of Ford Y-Blocks are five quarts plus filter except the HD trucks.  This includes both front and rear sump oil pans.  The HD trucks were six quarts plus filter.  Checking the owners manual can help to verify the correct oil amount.  As far as new replacement dipsticks goes, I’m surprised that Macs and Dennis Carpenter do not offer a tube/dipstick combination for the Y but did not see one in their listings.

On my end, I use a Canton universal dipstick kit for the Ford Y engines.  This does require the existing dipstick hole in the block to be threaded to a ¼” NPT thread which can be a problem if the engine isn’t already disassembled where it can be properly cleaned.  Here’s the link to a previous posting showing pictures of the Canton dipstick installed on a Y engine.
