I can only relate to my cars, if the round style like this i have them app 5" back from door edge, you need to be able to see from it and open the vent window, the passenger side is useless.

My Ranch Wagon is a Customline and it has one mirror mounted to the fender. If l were putting new mirrors on and wasn't wanting factory correct I would use a set of peeps. The one on my car isn't that helpful at all. Doesn't offer much of a view. Just my two cents.

There must be something in the trim book or in a dealer bulletin that spells it out. I thought I put mine in the right place but the passenger side was useless, couldn't see it, and the drivers side slightly interfered with the vent window. I guess what I'm saying is when they passed out the annal part for engineering I must have been in the other room. Chuck

My first hole is 1-9/16" down from the door top and back 2-5/8" back from the fender/door line. The head of the mirror is pretty much inline with the main windshield frame. It is in the same place as our original one purchased new in 1956. The closer it is to you the larger the images appear in it. I don't see how one uses one mounted out on the fender, but it is a personal choice. I'll send a photo if you like... Good Luck

I have owned three different 1956 Fairlanes. All had the mirrors mounted on the doors.  Hope that helps.

I'm sure that others will chime in on this, but I think it depended on the model  car you had. It's my understanding that the Customline, for example, didn't come with factory mounted mirrors, they were options  that the dealer could mount wherever you wanted them. I think they all mounted with sheet metal screws which loosen over time.

Any one know the correct location for both mirrors? These are 2 hole round style. I've seen them mounted on fenders and doors. Which is correct? Replacing peep mirror
