not sure of the thermostat its running; maybe I should switch to a hotter/cooler one?
Unless the thermostat that is presently in the engine is stuck, changing to a hotter or colder thermostat is NOT going to help with overheating. Once the temperature of coolant is above the setting of the thermostat it is WFO.

Check to see if there's oil actually coming down from the valve cover to the spot where the head meets the block. VC gasket is easy to fix.. Good luck.

Oil stop leak is only a band aid. It works by softening and swelling the seals. It does it to all the seals in the engine, not just the leaky ones. Eventually they will start leaking again, but much worse which could came back to bite you if the buyer isn't aware of it. I would either replace the seals or sell it as is and stay away from the mechanic in a can.

If the coolant is not boiling out of the radiator and the temperature is stable, there is no problem, so don't "fix" it. If the engine is really in need of a rebuild, then an oil stop leak should be fine. I would not use that stuff in an engine that is otherwise good. No real reason, only personal preference.

Daniel's car seems to run a little hot, so I'm wondering about one of the many off the shelf products claiming to lower the temp approx. 20 degrees cooler... and for the minor oil leak (near as I can tell, off the pass side rear of the engine about where the head and block meet)... half a dozen products claiming to stem oil leaks... any warnings, suggestions, other fixes? can't really afford a "real" fix/repair at this point. not sure of the thermostat its running; maybe I should switch to a hotter/cooler one? I'm trying to get this thing as sorted as possible while trying to sell it... the oil leak really stains up the bottom behind the engine. I'd check that out if I was looking to buy; not sure anyone else would but I need to make as good an impression as possible! thanks,Mark
