If it's a older trans, they use a different gear than the later ones.  The change was in 57 I believe.  If the trans uses the newer gear, be aware that there are different pitches to them.  One has a left hand pitch, the other has a right hand pitch.

I am have trouble getting a gear to work in my T85 trans,  I think I have the correct gear, it just wouldn't mesh and rotate.  I have a older 6volt t85 that I am using in my 54 Merc.  Does anybody know the correct length?
