I've never had issues using engine primer.  I'm sure VHT and others make that.

I have one on Mummert's aluminum valley covers which I want to paint the same as the engine (VHT engine enamel).  I have been advised to use self etching primer but no one can tell me if it will hold up to engine heat.  I have access to some Sherman-Williams and SEM. 
Will either stand up to the engine heat or is there something else that will be better?  Thanks.
