Hi Guys,  Also newbie to Y-blocks and just learned about setting timing to 8-10 degrees insted of stock 3 degrees,thanks ! My question is I'm running a 272 c. i. with mild cam,headers,alum.manifold (4 barrel),500 cfm carb.,MSD dist.,I bought a set of Autolite 45's, do I set gap .028 stock or change the gap (running 4-speed)?    If you have a decent coil, and larger wires, try opening the gap to .035" the try .045". The larger gap will give a better chance to ignite the mixture, if the ignition is up to the task. Newer cars can run .060". I can get away with .045' and my blower, no problem

Thanks Frank,  Got the MSD coil and Streetfire wires,set the gap at .040 and she fired right up! Have to reset the timing to 8 or 10 degrees and dial in the carb a little and then ride boldly ride! Oh! Is that near Goshen or Southbend? And is the St. Joseph river still brown ? (Elkhart brat transplanted to Left Coast-- LOL)  Skip

Wider POINT gap = retarded timing. Wide PLUG gap = easier starting, but risks high rpm missing (from what I've read).

        The newer stronger coils will fire .060 pretty easily. My MSD doesn't misfire at 6500 with 6 or 7 lbs of boost and 045" gap. As far as the timing, I'd be amazed if you could see the difference, although it's there, with a timing light. It has to require an extra nano-second to build up a little extra amperage. 

     Courier, Bristol is about ten miles East of Elkhart, right on 80/90. North of Goshen about ten miles. And , this time of year, the beatiful Elkhart river is very high, and very brown.
