There is a chance that Wild's outfit is simply rigged to be running on manifold vacuum - which works just fine on about a zillion old automobiles. Where is the vacuum pot connected to the engine? Wildlogger - if you (judiciously) attach a (clean) vacuum tube to the pot on the distributor - and apply vacuum with your mouth - does the point plate move? If you have a way to get a vacuum gauge on the engine - it will help your cause a tremendous amount, so hunt one down. Some pieces of rubber vacuum tubing and a plastic tee from the auto parts store will be your friend. Most of us have gathered an assortment of "old time" tune up tools - they pay off. A vacuum gauge, a timing light, and a "dwell tachometer" are big on the list.
Its perhaps a lot simpler to tune the engine to run without the Ford idle vacuum scheme - than it is for a new guy to modify a "maybe it works" teapot carb. The only difference will be that with the Ford scheme the engine is simply running on the mechanical advance alone at idle - changing to add the "ported" vacuum advance when the throttle plate opens. Its the reason the stock engines thump along, somewhat retarded at curb idle. Sounds cool - and heats the water.
