In anticipation of replacing the front cross member, I'm removing the front splash/gravel pan. 
There appears to be some sort of insulating/anti squeak material between the parts.
Any idea what I could use when I reassemble?

So you are going to tackle the front cross member replacement too! I bought a new one for our 56 Ranch Wagon, but haven't started on the project yet because we are moving once again! I now have all the new parts packed in back of the wagon. It would be great if you could post some pictures or describe any problems you have when doing the job.

Yes, I'll try to remember to take some pics of the process. I bought one of the replacement cross members from
Goodell Fabrications. A fellow in Texas sent me a couple of pics of his, but nothing re the installation process.
He mentioned that it took two of them (people) to install and it took no more than fours hours total, both in &
out.
I'm just waiting for some reasonable weather to get to it.

I've never replaced a crossmember, but I suggest that  you weld a pieces of metal across the width of the frame so the frame does not move.

Moving back to Idaho. About a long day's drive from where we are now in Bishop, CA. Gone full circle now. Started out in Boise, up to Salmon, ID, over to Newport Me, down to Bishop and now back to Boise. Had nothing better to do (yeah, right!).

One other idea on the new cross member install; I bought the same Goodall Fabrication cross member. When you look at the weld locations of the original cross member, there is not a lot of extra steel to weld to. I plan on trying to "surgically" cut the welds and grind off the excess. Also, I plan on leaving the front bumper on which, in combination with the tubular motor mount, should keep the frame horns in position when you remove the front cross member. Not to take away what Paul said though, It's not a bad idea to tack weld in 1" square stock between the frame horns as extra insurance.
