Good Morning to all; I know that this a small problem for many cars. Some have vent tubs, some don,t One thing that I do and yes it is extra work , BUT it works,I use a small block of wood and run that side tire on it, 2,3,or 4 inches. That gets the filler tub raised up past the level.  I have a 1996 Ford F350 4X4 and the back tank has always been hard to fill. I cut a block of wood 4X8,18inches long, with a 45 on one end, that works very well, plus i can get an extra gallon and half in the tank. Get the filler neck past level. Hope that works for you

The tank has to be vented somwhere. 57 cars are vented with a tube that goes up inside the quarter panel & then turns down to the fill location at the rear license plate. The only other possibility is a vented fuel cap. When the tank is getting quite full, back off on the fill rate & don't try to put more fuel in it once it shuts off once..  Hope that helps?

At least it seems like I'm not the only one with the problem.

To my recollection there is no vent tube on it. Need to crawl under it and look again but I don't remember seeing one when I installed the new tank. It did the same thing with the old tank and has had this problem since I bought the car in 1965.

I always thought that the flat angle of the fill tube was problematic. Even on the cars the automatic switch off will push some fuel out. When these tanks are full they are really full. Can hardly squeeze any more gas in.

Y's guys rule!

You might want to check that the vent tube is clear.

Mine does sometimes, especially when I set the automatic fill thing on the pump.  I now always control the flow (at least for the last several gallons) by hand and very slowly.  I assume the basic problem is a poor vent, but really don't know.

Car has been apart for 4 to 5 years. Forgot that when I fill the gas tank it always splashes gas all over the side of the car when the pump shuts off. Forgot how messy and annoying it was. Do the rest of you guys with '57's have this problem?
