When I get my engine complete & running, how can I determine whether the Rockers are getting oil properly? Thanks Jim

Is your engine's oiling setup stock & also the cam?

A visual examination with the valve covers off will suffice. Any oil at all is typically sufficient. If there is going to be a cam bearing issue, it usually takes at least 200-250 miles for that to surface.

How far along are you on the build? I always spin the pump and check that oil is coming up the passages in the block before I install the heads. If you the heads are installed you can still spin the pump and see oil to the rockers. Or wait until you fire it up and remove the valve covers and do a visual check, it will be obvious.

ted and jim are right on,tho the cam and cam bering will determine amount of flow with static test. grove cam , outer groved cam big will show flow to rockers, where drilled cam won't at pre lube.

Thanks fellows The engine is complete and running. I just want to make sure all is OK, before starting a long trip. I will pull the valve covers as suggested Regards Jim

If you are pulling the valve covers it would be good to check the HOT valve adjustment before taking a long trip..

Hello; I would like to add my two and half cents. I modified and old Dist, so I can use it on my new builds, or to check out an old engine, Pull the valve covers, so you can see the valve train, and then I use my heavy duty electric Drill and spin it to get oil pressure, and oil thru the engine to the rockers, it is great if you roll the engine over a couple of times, to make sure the cam and ports are open. When I use this way I put a pressure gauge on it to see how much pressure I get. This way your engine is primed and the oil filter is full, and ready to start

To add to what jumpstart said, oil can be added to the oil filter before installation. Just bench fill it about 3/4 full, rotate it in hand slightly tipped until it absorbes some into the filter material, then refill about 1/2 full & install it. .Also, if I recall correctly, if using a drill adaptor to pre prime, it needs to be run in "reverse or counter clockwise"..
